What is Bend Roots?
“Bend Roots” is both an annual festival and a renaissance of creative energy rising up in Central Oregon. The symbol of the Redbird, which originally emerged as an art installation where the “Roots Fest” was born in 2006, is often associated with the Revival today. She is a red-orange phoenix rising from the ash, and also landing, setting down roots. Our culture thrives in its connection to nature and the arts. The Redbird links us to both. As a ritual intended to invoke her wisdom, the Roots Revival is a grand celebration of music, art and culture in Bend.
The Bend Roots Revival is a free, family-friendly festival featuring over 100 musical acts and educational workshops. The event takes place annually, the last week in September, and showcases all genres—from folk, country, bluegrass, blues, and hip-hop, to funk, punk, metal, jazz, and rock.
Over a decade in the making, this festival is a multi-faceted phenomenon, an authentic grassroots expression emerging from a culture contained by volcanos and expansive high desert. Home to seven stages between the Art Station and Deschutes Brewery warehouse alongside a bend in the river, Roots is a revival of creativity, and the end-of-summer party for locals in Central Oregon.
Revenue from fundraising efforts, donations at the festival, Deschutes Brewery beer sales, and merchandise sold at the Revival, support art and music education in our community through the Roots Educational Collective, and the local 501(c)(3) charitable arts organization, Rise Up Presents.
This group of artists, musicians, local businesses partners, and philanthropists, has grown, over the last decade, to help fund and run arts-outreach programs at Westside Village Magnet School, REALMS Middle School, Cascades Academy, the Tamarack Program and Bend International School.
Other Roots Events
In addition to the Revival, throughout the year, Bend Roots organizes a series of interactive art and music events, like the legendary Church of Neil celebration and Dead at the Doj (multi-band live tributes to Neil Young and the Grateful Dead respectively), the Chow Summer Jam, and the Roots Art and Music Camp for Youth, hosted by Westside Village School.
